Adolescents as Delinquent Actors and as Targets of Preventive Measures

Purpose: The article aims at examining the prevalence of deviance and delinquency in a sample of students, at explaining property and violent offending via risk factors and examining students’ experiences with and views on preventive approaches. Design/Methods/Approach: Data stem from a school survey conducted among 2186 13–17 year old male and female students, who attended school in an urban or a rural northwest area of Germany. The instrument was developed on the basis of the new ISRD-3 questionnaire and included newly developed questions on students’ experiences with and views on preventive actors and approaches. Descriptive as well as multivariate methods are applied. Findings: Deviance and delinquency were found to be widespread, but mostly of low severity. Different predictors for violent and property offending can be found. Groups of students with differential involvement in delinquency show clearly differentiated profiles with regard to risk factors. Experiences, Perceptions and Attitudes Variations of Police–Adolescents Relationships in French and German Cities

POLIS is an acronym for “Police and Adolescents in Multiethnic Societies” and the title of a French-German research project run by the CNRS, PACTE research unit of Science-Po - University of Grenoble, and the Max Planck Institute for Foreign and International Criminal Law in Freiburg. What makes this project distinct from previous comparative studies is the use of a common theoretical framework embedded in a multi-methods and multi city research design, a systematic and broad empirical approach which combines qualitative, in-depth field research with two large-scale quantitative school surveys. Summing up these findings from the quantitative survey, we find a clear difference between French and German cities in all dimensions of police-adolescents relationships: In the frequency and quality of encounters between adolescents and police officers, in the adolescents’ indirect perceptions of police behavior, and finally in their attitudes towards the police. This study analyses the cooperation between police and border guard authorities in the Baltic Sea area and primarily one collaborative project initiated by the Stockholm border police (cofunded by the EU). The purpose of the project is to decrease trans-boundary criminality and improve day-to-day cooperation between police and border officers in the Baltic Sea region. The participants are police and border authorities in Estonia, Finland, Latvia, Lithuania, and Sweden. Earlier research on collaboration shows that cooperation comprises problems and conflicts. Studying the Correlates of Adolescents’ Trust in the Police: A Conflict Theory Approach

This study examined high school students’ trust in police in from a conflict theory point of view by using Ungdata Vestland County package (N=7,796). Four models were tested by employing binary logistic regression analysis. Seven out of eight variables of conflict theory were significant to predict students’ trust in the police, but conflict theory alone accounted for a low level of variation in predicting trust in the police (5%). In Model 2, variables related to victimization, safety feelings, and antisocial behavior alone were significant in predicting students’ trust in police. This variable group happened to be two times more powerful to predict students’ trust in the police compared to conflict theory variables. The third model assessed the capacity of social capital variables to predict students’ trust in the police.
