A roof box is a large box that can be attached securely to the roof of your car. Roof boxes are designed to offer additional storage space for things like sleeping bags, suitcases, sports bags, outdoor equipment, camping equipment or sports gear.
To fit a roof box, you will need both a set of roof bars that run down the length of your vehicle and also a set of roof bars that run across the width of your vehicle from one side to the other.
To determine which cargo boxes fit your vehicle without contacting your hatch, measure from the center of your vehicle's front roof rack crossbar to the point where the roof meets the hatch. Compare this number to the "Front Clearance" dimensions below.
Bulky, lightweight things fit well in roof boxes: Things that take up a lot of space but don't weigh a ton are good items to put up top in roof boxes. So, things like tents, sleeping bags, sleeping pads, pillows, camp chairs, etc. are good options.
Try and pack the heavier items in the car if possible.
However, it is always best if possible to try and put the heavier/more bulky items in the car if possible, leaving all that roof box room for smaller things like suitcases, clothing, toys, food, rucksacks, shoes….
A car roof box expands your vehicle's storage capacity, allowing you to carry more items comfortably. It keeps your interior clutter-free, ensures passenger comfort, and offers an ideal solution for long journeys or outdoor activities.
Please remember that when adding a roof box to your car it will extend the height of your vehicle by up to 75 cm depending on the box and rack fitted. If you are travelling on the Ferry/Eurostar this may mean you will have to go into the over height vehicles compartment.
If you have a couple of smaller suitcases, they'll probably be able to fit neatly side-by-side in a roof box, leaving room for other items while helping to stop everything from sliding around. A larger suitcase could play the same role, fitting comfortably while helping to anchor other items in place.
Further forward tends to increase noise. I would suggest if you put it rearward and can open the rear hatch without fowling the box you are in a reasonably good position. Some roof boxes actually give better aerodynamics if fitted “backwards” (i.e. thin end of the wedge toward the rear).
Fitting a roof box in the middle of the roof may look neater but it's not very practical as you'll have to reach right over to fit and load the box (unless you go for a wider box). A lot of smaller boxes are rear opening. They are a good option for smaller cars and will often allow you to load the box from three sides.
The high price tag attached to roof cargo boxes is because they are built with high-quality materials and designed for long-lasting use. For example, a premium quality cargo box is usually constructed from lightweight aluminum and will come with a PVC coating for weather protection.
It's important to check with your manufacturer or dealer to see what their recommendation is, as some cars have specific restrictions when it comes to carrying extra weight on the roof. In general, though, two roof boxes should be fine as long as they don't exceed the maximum weight capacity of your car.
What is most affected when you drive with an unloaded roof box? When you drive with an unloaded roof box, fuel consumption is most affected. An empty roof box does not weigh much, but its height, shape and placement increases air resistance so much that fuel consumption increases by approximately 10%.
As a guide, 400 litres of capacity should give you more than enough room to successfully store holdall style bags, coats, bike helmets and wellies for a family of four. If you need extra room, a 570-580 litre one will roughly take a bike in a bike bag, a few sleeping bags and a pop-up tent.
Roof Mount Cargo Boxes offer the most flexibility because they mount to your vehicle's pre-existing factory crossbars OR your aftermarket multipurpose base roof rack system. They are ideal for skis, snowboards, camping supplies, strollers, and other necessities that need to be protected from the elements.
Thule roof boxes have a load capacity of about 75kg/165lbs and most vehicles have the same maximum capacity. Double check with your car manufacturer to see if that's the case for your car. In general, when packing your roof box, try to pack lighter, bulkier items like tents, clothes or sleeping bags.
A roof rack is a perfect carrier that enables you to load up your vehicle and carry bulky equipment from sporting goods to camping gear and a range of other items. It's also important to remember to always secure your load regardless of the type of roof rack or rail installed to your vehicle.
