Notes and statistics from the Giants' 29-3 loss to the Chicago Bears:
*The Giants executed a run-heavy offensive plan, rushing 40 times for 161 yards, their second-highest total of the season; they ran for 163 yards at Washington on Sept. 16. The 40 attempts were a season-high and the most the Giants have had since they ran 42 times in a victory in Cincinnati on Nov. 29, 2020.
*The three points were the fewest scored by the Giants in Joe Judge's two seasons as coach. Their previous low was six points, in a 14-point loss to Cleveland on Dec. 20, 2020, and a 15-point defeat against Dallas on Dec. 19.
*The Giants did not score a touchdown for the third time this season and the third time in their last five games, including a 20-9 loss in Miami on Dec. 5 and the 20-6 defeat to Dallas two weeks ago. They have scored 72 points in their last seven games and four touchdowns in the last five games.
*The loss was the Giants' fifth in a row and dropped their record to 4-12. They have been outscored during the losing streak, 141-49, and all five losses have been by double digits. They will end their season at home next week against 6-10 Washington.
*The Giants lost their sixth consecutive road game and finished 1-8 as visitors. The victory was in New Orleans on Oct. 3.
*The 26-point margin of defeat was the Giants' third largest in two seasons under Judge. They lost by 27 points to San Francisco on Sept. 27, 2020, and to the Rams on Oct. 24.
*Mike Glennon played the entire game at quarterback and threw only 11 passes. He completed four for 24 yards. But he was sacked four times for losses totaling 34 yards, so the Giants finished with minus-10 net passing yards, which the Elias Sports Bureau said was the lowest in franchise history. The last NFL team with so few net passing yards was the San Diego Chargers with minus-19 vs. Kansas City on Sept. 20, 1998.
*The 11 attempts were the fewest by the Giants since Oct. 25, 1992, when Jeff Hostetler threw nine passes (completing five) in a 23-10 victory against Seattle. The four completions was the Giants' lowest total since Oct. 22, 1978, when Joe Pisarcik hit three of 10 throws in a 17-6 victory against Washington. The Giants' 24 passing yards were their fewest since they had 24 in a 17-0 victory against the St. Louis Cardinals on Dec. 10, 1978.
*The 24 gross passing yards was not the lowest total in the NFL this season. The New England Patriots totaled 19 yards through the air while throwing only three passes in their 14-10 victory in Buffalo on Dec. 6.
*On the game's first play, unblocked Chicago linebacker Trevis Gipson mugged Glennon for a seven-yard sack and forced a fumble that was recovered by Bilal Nichols, who returned the ball 12 yards to the Giants' two-yard line. David Montgomery ran for a touchdown on the next play with just 18 seconds elapsed.
*The turnover was the Giants' first on their initial offensive play since Oct. 16, 2016, when Odell Beckham, Jr. fumbled the ball away after catching a five-yard pass from Eli Manning against Baltimore in MetLife Stadium.
*The Giants committed a turnover on their first offensive series for the third time this season. In Kansas City on Nov. 2, Daniel Jones' first pass of the game on the Giants' second play was intercepted by linebacker Wille Gay. On the Giants' sixth play two weeks ago against Dallas, Glennon threw to Sterling Shepard as he was hit by DeMarcus Lawrence and the ball was intercepted by Jourdan Lewis, who returned it 18 yards to the Giants' 13.
*Montgomery's touchdown was the first by a Giants opponent on their first offensive play and the fastest touchdown against the Giants since Sept. 13, 1998, when Oakland's Napoleon Kaufman scored on an 80-yard run just 17 seconds into what became a 20-17 loss to the Raiders.
*Chicago joined Tampa Bay and Las Vegas as opponents to score first possession touchdowns against the Giants this season.
*The Giants also turned over the ball on their second possession, when Glennon's pass for Kenny Golladay was tipped by Artie Burns and intercepted by Tashaun Gipson, who returned it 31 yards to the Giants' 24, setting up Andy Dalton's four-yard touchdown pass to Darnell Mooney. It was the first time the Giants committed turnovers on each of their first two possessions since Dec. 30, 2018, when Manning threw an interception and lost a fumble in a 36-35 loss to Dallas.
*Chicago was the first Giants opponent to score touchdowns on each of its first two offensive possessions this season. The Giants' 14-0 deficit after one quarter was their first since Dec. 27, 2020, in Baltimore.
*The Bears increased their lead to 19-3 by scoring on a safety with 52 seconds left in the second quarter. On second-and-14 from the Giants' one, Devontae Booker took a handoff and was unable to get the ball out of the end zone (after the initial ruling that was reversed on review). Chicago is the first Giants opponent with a safety since Dec. 6, 2020, when Riley Dixon's punt was blocked by Seattle's Ryan Neal and the ball was ruled out of bounds in the back of the end zone.
*In the final 1:01 of the second quarter, Cairo Santos kicked two field goals sandwiched around the safety. Those eight points increased the Giants' season deficit to 76-0 in the final two minutes of the first half.
*The Giants trailed at halftime, 22-3. The 19-point deficit was their second largest this season after two quarters. On Oct. 17, they were behind the Rams after two quarters, 28-3.
*Saquon Barkley led the Giants with 102 rushing yards on 21 carries – a 4.9-yard average – several of them after taking a direct shotgun snap from center Matt Skura. It was the first 100-yard game by a Giants back since Dec. 6, 2020, when Wayne Gallman ran for 135 yards in a victory in Seattle.
*Before Gallman's big game, Barkley had the Giants' previous 11 100-yard outings, most recently on Dec. 22, 2019, when he ran for 189 yards in a victory in Washington
*Barkley's 12th 100-yard game tied him with Ahmad Bradshaw for fifth on the Giants' career list. The Giants are 5-7 when Barkley runs for at least 100 yards.
*Barkley's 21 carries were the most he's had since he ran 22 times in the game in Washington two seasons ago.
*Booker rushed for 46 yards on 19 carries. He also had a team-high two receptions – for zero yards.
*The Giants' longest play was a 13-yard run by Glennon.
*Evan Engram and David Sills had the Giants' other catches, each for 12 yards. Sills played in his third game of the season and career. He caught his first NFL pass last week in Philadelphia.
*The Giants committed a season-high four turnovers (two lost fumbles and two interceptions, all by Glennon) for the second time in three weeks and the third time this season. Against the Rams on Oct. 17 and Dallas on Dec. 19, they threw three interceptions and lost one fumble.
*The Giants did get two second-half takeaways. James Bradberry intercepted an Andy Dalton pass with 2:30 remaining in the third quarter. It was the Giants' first interception since they had three against Philadelphia on Nov. 28. Bradberry's pick was his fourth of the season, one behind team leader Xavier McKinney.
*With 1:42 remaining in the fourth quarter, Montgomery took a direct snap and threw a pass to tight end Cole Kmet that was intercepted by linebacker Tae Crowder.
*Linebackers Lorenzo Carter and Jaylon Smith each sacked Dalton, for two and nine yards, respectively. It was Carter's third consecutive games with a sack and increased his season total to 4.0. Smith's sack was his first in his three games with the Giants.
*Leonard Williams led the Giants with eight tackles (two solo). Smith had seven stops (five solo).
*Montgomery scored on a pair of two-yard runs to join New Orleans quarterback Taysom Hill as Giants opponents to rush for two touchdowns this season. The last running back to do it was Dallas' Ezekiel Elliott on Oct. 11, 2020.
*Graham Gano scored the Giants' only points on a 38-yard field goal in the second quarter. Gano has scored 103 points this season.
*Defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence missed the first game in his three NFL seasons because he is on the Reserve/COVID-19 list. Lawrence had played in 47 consecutive games to start his career.
Joining him on the list and out of uniform were wide receiver Darius Slayton, defensive tackle Danny Shelton and tackle Korey Cunningham. Slayton missed three games earlier this season with a hamstring injury. Shelton remained on the COVID-19 reserve list for a second straight week. He was also inactive for the game in Kansas City on Nov. 2 with a pec injury.
*Nate Solder returned to the lineup at right tackle after missing the game last week in Philadelphia because he was on the COVID-19 list. Matt Peart, who replaced Solder, tore his ACL. Peart's stand-in was Cunningham.
*Center Billy Price was inactive. He did not practice with the team last week after his wife, Taylor, suffered a miscarriage, which Price revealed on Instagram. Skura, who started the previous 13 games at left guard, played center. Wes Martin made his first start of the season at left guard. He had played in five previous games.
*Ben Bredeson and Derrick Kelly were the O-line backups and each played extensively as the Giants sometimes used seven linemen to help facilitate their run game. Bredeson played most of the second half at left guard.
*Kelly, 6-5 and 320 pounds, made his Giants debut. The Giants signed him to their practice squad on Oct. 19, one week after his release from the New Orleans Saints' practice squad. Kelly played 16 offensive and 22 special teams snaps for the Saints in 2020. His most recent appearance was on Christmas Day, 2020 vs. Minnesota.
*The Giants' inactive players were wide receivers Kadarius Toney (shoulder), John Ross (knee/COVID-19 ramp up) and Collin Johnson (hamstring), linebacker Oshane Ximines and Price.
*Wide receiver Alex Bachman played in his second game of the season and third in his two-year career. He was on the field for nine special teams plays two weeks ago vs. Dallas.
*Defensive tackle Woodrow Hamilton assisted on two tackles and he played in his 10th career game and first for the Giants. He played two games for the Tennessee Titans in Weeks 3-4 against Indianapolis and the Jets. Hamilton was waived by the Titans on Oct. 12 and signed to the Giants' practice squad on Oct. 20. He was released six days later and re-signed to the practice squad on Dec. 12. Hamilton also played in two games with one start for the New England Patriots in 2016 and in five games for Carolina in 2020.
*The loss ensures the Giants will finish fourth in the NFC East, meaning their 2022 opponents are almost finalized.
The NFC East will face the NFC North and AFC South next season. Because NFC teams will host the 17th game that was added this year, the Giants will have nine home games in 2022. In addition to their home-and-home series with division opponents Dallas, Philadelphia and Washington, the Giants will host Chicago, Detroit, Houston, Indianapolis, as well as the fourth-place team from the NFC South (Carolina) and the AFC North (Baltimore, Cleveland or Pittsburgh). They will play road games in Green Bay, Minnesota, Jacksonville, Tennessee and the NFC West fourth-place team (Seattle).
