Directions for Back to School Breakfast – French Toast Bake

It is best to prepare this the night before and let it soak overnight. If not soaking overnight, I would dip each bread piece into the batter individually, position each into the pan (as described below), then pour the remainder of the batter over the top, sprinkle with cinnamon and topping and then bake at 350 degrees for 40 minutes.

These directions apply if baking after soaking overnight:

Step 1: Layer a piece of parchment paper over the pan’s interior. Use your hands to fold the paper so it fits inside nicely. Butter large baking dish- lasagna pan will do nicely. Layer five slices and two halves of toast on.

Ideally, the bread should be slightly stale. A drier bread will soak up all the custard. Bread can be left out with the wrapper open the day before cooking. If you find yourself in a pinch, dry your bread slices in a 275°F oven for 10 minutes before soaking them in the custard.

Does overnight French toast get soggy? ›

There are a few potential reasons why your overnight French toast may be soggy. One possible culprit is that you did not use dense enough bread, which allowed the custard mixture to soak in too much.

Serve immediately. Leftover French toast may be wrapped tightly in plastic wrap or foil and refrigerated for a couple of days. Warm before serving (or eat cold if you're weird like me).

What is the most common mistake in making French toast? ›

Not whisking the custard enough.

Little bits of cooked egg white clinging to the finished product isn't ideal, so be sure you whisk your eggs with your dairy, sugar, and any spices you're using, thoroughly so the custard is evenly combined.

What is the ratio of eggs to milk for French toast? ›

Whatever you decide on, the ratio of liquid to egg will still be about ¼ cup liquid to one egg, and one egg per two slices of bread. So, if you want to make four slices of French toast, you would need four slices of bread, two eggs, and ½ cup milk.

What kind of oil do you use for French toast? ›

A neutral oil, like canola, is the way to go since it won't disrupt the flavor of the butter. Opt for medium-low heat: Medium-low heat is the way to go with French toast; it won't cause it to burn, but it's aggressive enough for pan-frying.

What is a typical French breakfast menu? ›

A typical French breakfast consists of a croissant or bread with butter and jam and sometimes a sweet pastry. Fresh fruit juice and hot beverages, like coffee or tea, are also included.

How are you supposed to eat French toast? ›

The standard approach can be gussied up even further beyond the requisite maple syrup and/or powdered sugar. I'm especially partial to some sort of caramelized or brûléed banana or peaches with brown sugar which is then poured over the French toast, but some rehydrated dried fruit is also a wonderful inclusion.
