2022 Jeep Wrangler: Choosing the Right Trim (2024)

The 2022 Jeep Wrangler descends from the original Jeep CJ, with two doors, a removable top, and the ability to go just about anywhere. Although not as versatile or encompassing as the 4-door Wrangler Unlimited, the Wrangler still has enough trims, engine choices, and options to give it broad appeal.

Regardless of trim, the Wrangler offers buyers a choice of powertrains. They include an available 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder and a 3.6-liter V6 with a mild hybrid. Regrettably, the Wrangler Unlimited’s diesel engine option isn’t available on the 2-door Wrangler.

2022 Jeep Wrangler Sport (starting at $29,725)

2022 Jeep Wrangler: Choosing the Right Trim (1)

The 2022 Jeep Wrangler Sport starts at $29,725.

As the entry-level model and trim, the Sport is the Wrangler at its most basic. In other words, it has all the ingredients Jeep enthusiasts look for without much else.

The 2022 Jeep Wrangler Sport comes with a potent 285-horsepower 3.6-liter V6 mated to a 6-speed manual transmission. Jeep’s Command-Trac part-time 4WD system comes standard. An 8-speed automatic adds another $2,500 to the bottom line.

The Sport is fitted with conventional differentials but has a heavy-duty Dana 44 rear axle. It also comes with three tow hooks, an engine oil cooler, and protective skid plates covering the fuel tank, transmission, and transfer case.

The Wrangler Sport features 17-inch black steel wheels wrapped with all-season tires. A full-size spare tire mounts on the Wrangler’s swing-out rear door. Jeep’s Sunrider soft top comes standard, with a new design making it much easier to take apart and put in place.

The Sport has solid steel doors with manual glass windows, manual-folding side mirrors, variable intermittent front wipers, and a key for locking and unlocking the doors. Halogen headlights and fog lights look sharp, as do black bumpers and a body-colored grille.

The Wrangler’s cabin is pretty comfortable, thanks to the standard low-back front bucket seats adorned in durable black or tan cloth. The seats are manually operated but do recline, with the driver’s seat having both height adjustment and manual lumbar support.

The Wrangler’s tilt/telescoping steering features buttons for audio, cruise control, and Bluetooth. At the same time, a simple yet straightforward instrument cluster includes a speedometer and tachometer separated by a 3.5-inch black and white digital information display. A push-button starter is standard, which is odd considering you need to use a key to unlock the doors.

A full-length floor console provides ample storage, as does the lockable glovebox and rear compartment storage tray. There are two 12-volt power outlets (one in front and one in the rear), cargo tie-down loops, and driver and passenger side assist handles. Little surprises include lighted cup holders and sliding sun visors with lighted vanity mirrors.

The Sport’s Uconnect 3 infotainment setup is as rudimentary as they come. It includes a 5-inch touch screen, an AM/FM radio with 8-speakers, voice activation via Bluetooth, two USB ports, and an auxiliary input jack.

Finally, we come to the safety and security section, which, given the Wrangler’s design, isn’t as robust as most modern SUVs. The Wrangler does include front and front side-impact airbags, along with electronic traction and stability control, electronic roll mitigation, hill-start assist, trailer sway damping, a rear backup camera, and a tire-pressure monitor.

Buyers have a wide choice of options and upgrades, including a doors-off mirror kit that allows you to bolt the side mirrors to the frame with the doors removed.

Three half-door packages are available: lowers only, lowers with base uppers, and lower with premium uppers. The difference between the base and premium uppers is the materials used around the outside frame. Premium uppers better match the soft-top material.

A 3-piece Freedom hardtop helps keep the cabin a bit more secure and quiet, but buyers can also opt for a solid or mesh Sunbonnet.

Other options of note include air conditioning, perforated or stitched leather seat inserts, SiriusXM satellite radio, a Corning Gorilla Glass windshield, and remote proximity key entry.

On the mechanical side, the Wrangler Sport offers a limited-slip rear differential, a cold air intake, and an engine-block heater. A reinforced gate hinge is a good idea for anyone planning to add more stuff to the rear gate.

The Trailer-Tow and Heavy-Duty Electrical Group is the only package. It adds a 240-amp alternator, 700-amp battery, 7- and 4-pin wiring harness, auxiliary switches, and a Class II trailer hitch.

With the $1,595 destination fee, the 2022 Jeep Wrangler Sport costs $31,320. On a 60-month loan at 3% financing and zero down, the monthly payment comes to $563.See 2022 Jeep Wrangler Sport models for sale

2022 Jeep Wrangler Willys Sport (starting at $31,785)

The Willys is a slightly more rugged version of the Sport, adding 17-inch low-gloss black alloy wheels, BF Goodrich 32-inch mud-terrain tires, heavy-duty shocks, and rock rails, plus Jeep’s Trac-Lok limited-slip rear differential.

The Willys wears a Willys hood decal, a black grille and black headlight inserts, and deep-tinted sunscreen side windows.

Options and packages are the same as for the Wrangler Sport.

The Willys borrows the Willys Sport’s 17-inch black wheels and 32-inch BF Goodrich tires, limited-slip differential, rock protection sills, and black exterior treatment. Additional standard equipment for the Willys includes LED headlights and LED fog lights.

Optional equipment for the Willys mirrors that of the Sport S.

2022 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon (starting at $40,500)

2022 Jeep Wrangler: Choosing the Right Trim (3)

The 2022 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon starts at $40,500.

Devoted off-road warriors know the name “Rubicon,” both for the rugged trial it represents and stamped on one of the only vehicles tough enough to conquer it.

The Wrangler Rubicon is built for hard-core off-road adventures. It upgrades over the Wrangler Willys trim with heavy-duty Dana 44 front and rear axles, Tru-Lok locking front and rear axles, a 4.10 rear axle ratio, and Jeep’s 4:1 Rock-Trac part-time 4WD system.

The Rock-Trac system provides greater torque at very low speeds. With its 73:1 crawl ratio, the system is ideally suited to crawling over large boulders or negotiating steep downgrades. Buyers have the option to upgrade to a Rock-Trac system with full-time 4WD.

Also part of the Rock-Trac system is an electronically disconnecting front sway bar essential when more wheel articulation is necessary. The Rubicon’s 17-inch wheels come wrapped in LT285/70R17C black sidewall off-road tires but can upgrade to mud-terrain or off-road tires.

A 220-amp alternator and 650-amp battery ensure maximum cranking power, and an Off-Road Plus mode alters traction control, transmission gear changes, and throttle inputs to improve off-road capability.

Standard equipment includes fog lights, ambient interior LED lighting, automatic climate control, power windows, power door locks, and the contents of the Technology Group.

Options for the Rubicon beyond the Sport S and Willys upgrades are a grille-mounted front camera, body-colored fender flares, steel front and rear bumpers, and a body-colored hardtop.

With the $1,595 destination fee, the 2022 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon sells for $42,095. On a 60-month loan at 3% financing and zero down, the monthly payment comes to $756. See 2022 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon models for sale

  • Locking differentials – The ability to lock the front and rear differentials is critical when low-speed rock crawling.
  • Rock-Trac – Includes a 4:1 low gear ratio explicitly designed for the Rubicon, offering the ability to creep over obstacles without losing power or grip.
